Artist Rande Cook has another show opening next week on Vancouver Island. A joint show with artist Sonny Assu “Ebb and Flow” will run June 1- Sept. 1 at the Nanaimo Art Gallery, which is located on the VIU Campus.
For those of you in the southern hemisphere, we are proud to announce that THE SKIN I’M IN will make its world LGBT festival premiere as part of New Zealand’s Out Takes 2012 Festival. Given New Zealand’s particular history of fierce independence and coexistence between Maori and immigrant populations, and a cultural ethos that eschews pretense or posturing, we’re extremely excited to share the film with New Zealand audiences.

THE SKIN I’M IN in had its U.S. Premiere at the 21st Annual Arizona International Film Festival and was awarded a Special Jury Prize for Best Personal Filmmaking.
The Arizona Daily Star made me an honorary Australian. 🙂 Confusion came from the fact that THE SKIN I’M IN is listed as a U.S./Australian co-production due to fact that exec producer Lee Biolos is Australian as well as the incredible generosity of Australian contributors. I’d be an honorary Australian any day!

I like to think I’m subverting the machine a bit, but I have been thinking a lot lately about how so much male drag, my own included, still subscribes to such a specific performance of gender in culture. That’s one of the reasons I highlight Leigh Bowery as a queer hero of mine in THE SKIN I’M IN. He (along with the artists who documented and interpreted his performances like Fergus Greer and Lucian Freud) pushed ideas of drag and performativity out of easily understandable binaries into the realms of the surreal and the unconscious.
In many ways, a sense of community is about finding a sense of home. Here is a link to a video of mine called HOME from 2009. It’s comprised of home movie footage in a mix of amateur formats (super 8 film, Hi-8 video, and mini DV) that I shot as I travelled between Berlin and Los Angeles with my first boyfriend between 1996 and 2005. He was German, and the opportunity to explore my identity in Berlin was something I’ll always be grateful for. Years later in 2008, with all the Prop 8 controversy aflame in California, I felt such a sense of deja vu. I pulled out this old footage and found the Prop 22 footage from 2000 now included in Home. I remember at the time, the passage of Prop 22 felt like such a blow to the possibility of my boyfriend (in America on a student visa) and I ever being able to set up a home in the United States.

THE SKIN I’M IN is one of 8 international documentaries to garner a 2012 Aloha Acolade Award from the Honolulu Film Awards. Hawaii plays a significant role in the film, as it is the place where Fox came him his darkest hour to get sober in 2005. Fox’s parents, featured in the film, are Kailua residents, and their example of support and tolerance will prove an inspiration and source of comfort for any parent who is faced with coming to terms with a child’s alternative identity or addiction issues.
